"The Left of Literacy series of paintings explores the origins of alphabet symbols and their role in the development of civilization.  My hope is that the viewer will take a moment to consider the associative meanings inferred from the shapes and forms that our minds have grown to process with split second immediacy.  Could there be a primal memory in our consciousness that hearkens to the hieroglyphic and cuneiform origins of the condensed group of symbols that constitute modern alphabets?"

The words of Samuel Taylor Coleridge from his 1798 poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, seem especially prescient today as we look toward an uncertain future where water will be our most valuable commodity and may also pose our greatest peril.  Our own late coming to realize respect for “all things great and small” reflects the mariner’s belated blessing of the “slimy things” of the “slimy sea” while wearing his albatross. My "Water" series of paintings seeks to express my concern of our precious natural resource - water. Cheryl Chapman
