Elder
Gallery represents over fifty American artists and a small
number of European artists. We offer a wide variety of styles,
media and subject matter and host several exhibitions throughout
the year to showcase our artists. We are the exclusive representative
for the collections of Leon A. Makielski (1885-1974)
and Ernest Walker (1892 -1991).
In addition to paintings, Elder Gallery represents a number
of three-dimensional artists who produce exquisite sculptures
made of bronze, steel, and stone; earthenware and porcelain.
Our artists have been recognized for excellence by prestigious
art publications, national organizations and exhibitions.
We operate two separate galleries on the same property in
Charlotte’s Historic SouthEnd District. Our main gallery
is used to host monthly exhibitions while Elder Annex Gallery
continuously exhibits work from our stable of artists.
In 2008 we will offer a wide variety of exhibitions to showcase
a number of our artists as well as special group shows which
will introduce new talent through our gallery.
During the month of June we present four new artists who have recently been selected to join our stable of artists. They include David Benson of South Carolina; Gage Opdenbrouw from California; Sheri Skeahan of North Carolina; and Angelita Surmon of Oregon .
Elder Gallery’s first sculpture show scheduled for July includes sculpture by Richard Aliberti, Carl Blair, Richard Conn, Lasha Khidasheli, Jean McWhorter, Karen Powell and Grant Strawcutter. We will hang new acquisitions from The Ernest Walker Collection featuring watercolors painted between 1920 and 1950 in NYC, Connecticut and England. Small paintings from NYC artists Jimmie James and Jill Stasium are also included.

Our August exhibition is entitled The Naturalist’s World and will feature paintings by many of our artists. North Carolina ceramist, Warner Hyde, uses the earth’s natural elements to create sculptural and functional environmental pottery. Photographer Gerald Levy rounds out the exhibition with his exceptional work.
We are fortunate to have David Skinner scheduled during the month of September. The Blue Ridge Mountains continue to be a favorite subject of Skinner’s unique painting style.
Brush with Reality is the title of our October show. Contemporary realist painters Mary Erickson, William Farnsworth, and Hodges Soileau are friends who show our world through their eyes. Soileau’s exquisite figure paintings are juxtaposed with Erickson’s lowcountry landscapes and Farnsworth’s mountain scenes.
During November we feature a solo exhibition of the paintings of Aaron Morgan Brown. A rising star in the American art scene, Brown was recently awarded first place in The Artist’s Magazine’s 24th Annual Art Competition which featured thousands of artists from around the world.
Winding up the year during the month of December will be San Francisco artist Daniel Bayless. In Daniel’s third solo exhibition at Elder Gallery we will show oil paintings that pay tribute to the American urban and rural landscapes.
Additional information on these shows as well as other events
can be found as they happen throughout the year under “Current
Show” on our homepage.
