Sculpture and Paintings
During the month of July Elder Gallery in Charlotte’s Historic SouthEnd arts district will overflow with exciting paintings and sculpture from a variety of artists. On July 11, 2008, the gallery will present ifs first exhibition of sculpture and will surround it with small paintings from three artists.
“We are fortunate to have been able to assemble such a wide variety of exceptional sculpture” says gallery owner Larry Elder. “Each sculptor has a distinct style and the materials used to create the work are as varied as each person’s technique.”
Participating in the exhibition will be sculptors Richard Aliberti, Carl Blair, Richard Conn, Lasha Khidasheli, Mitch Lewis, Jean McWhorter, Karen Powell and Grant Strawcutter. The sculptors have created life-size, table-top and wall-mounted figurative and abstract work constructed of bronze, stone, wood, metal and ceramics.
To add further interest to the exhibition, paintings by New York artists Jill Stasium and Jimmie James will hang in close proximity to the sculpture. Stasium’s oil paintings pay tribute to New York City where she lives and paints. Her paintings depict bridges, buildings, streets and shop store windows which are painted on printed fabrics and then mounted on canvas. The designs in the fabric become part of each painting.
Jimmie James is a painter, songwriter and vocalist. His abstract paintings on paper possess a childlike quality and deal with topics similar to those in his songs, love, rejection, hope and anger.
Other two-dimensional work in the exhibition will be newly acquired watercolor paintings from the Ernest Walker Collection. Approximately twenty miniature paintings completed between 1920 and 1950 will be shown. The recently acquired paintings depict scenes of the artist’s neighborhood of Redding Center, Connecticut during the 1940s. The luminosity of each painting showcases the tremendous talent of this important early twentieth century American artist.
The exhibition at Elder Gallery opens with a reception and runs through July 29, 2008.
