Philip
Mullen
Solo Exhibition
Elder Gallery in Charlotte presents its third solo exhibition
for internationally recognized artist, Philip Mullen. The
exhibition will begin with an artist’s reception on
Friday, May 2, 2008, at 6:00 p.m.
Mullen was born in 1942. He received his B.A. from the University
of Minnesota in 1964, M.A. in Studio Art from the University
of North Dakota in 1966 and Ph.D. in Comparative Arts from
Ohio University in 1960. He now lives in South Carolina and
is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art at the University
of South Carolina.
Elder Gallery’s 2008 exhibition includes paintings completed
over the past thirteen years which were greatly influenced
by his travels to different countries. During a trip to China
the artist became fascinated by the beauty of koi ponds and
the graceful movement of the fish. He challenged himself to
capture the color, movement, and ever-changing complexities
of the fish and has since created a series of paintings on
canvas. One such painting is an imposing triptych entitled
“Seasons of Koi” which is the centerpiece of the
exhibition.
Mullen’s work has been included in the Whitney Museum’s
Biennial of Contemporary Art; the Smithsonian’s Contemporary
American Drawing V; and the San Francisco Museum of Art’s
National Drawing Exhibition.
A partial listing of museums who have included Mullen’s
work in their permanent collections are the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, Sonje Museum of Contemporary
Art (South Korea), Palm Springs Desert Museum, the Denver
Art Museum, the Mint Museum, the Spartanburg Art Museum, and
the Columbia Museum of Art.
Elder Gallery’s exhibition will run through May 31,
2008.
