Mullen Solo Exhibition
At Elder Gallery in Charlotte
Elder Gallery in Charlotte presents its second solo exhibition
for internationally recognized artist, Philip Mullen. The
exhibition will begin with an artist’s reception on
Friday, March 3, 2006, at 6:00 p.m.
At 11:00 a.m. during the day of the opening event Elder Gallery
will host a discussion with the artist in the main exhibition
gallery. “Philip is admired by so many collectors, painters
and fellow artisans for his painting style,” says gallery
owner Larry Elder. “Our goal is to create a scenario
wherein the artist will speak frankly about his work and share
what’s going on in his head as he constructs his work.”
Mullen was born in 1942. He received his B.A. from the University
of Minnesota in 1964, M.A. in Studio Art from the University
of North Dakota in 1966 and Ph.D. in Comparative Arts from
Ohio University in 1960. He now lives in South Carolina and
is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art at the University
of South Carolina.
Elder Gallery’s 2006 exhibition includes a series of
new paintings on paper entitled “Matisse Remembered.”
“Since many people see similarities between the painting
styles of both artists Philip decided to incorporate images
from Matisse’s paintings into his,” says Elder.
“This year’s exhibition holds a great deal of
excitement for the viewer since Philip is exploring several
new avenues in this latest work”.
Mullen’s work has been included in the Whitney Museum’s
Biennial of Contemporary Art; the Smithsonian’s Contemporary
American Drawing V; and the San Francisco Museum of Art’s
National Drawing Exhibition.
He is included in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, Sonje Museum of Contemporary
Art (South Korea), Palm Springs Desert Museum, the Denver
Art Museum, the Mint Museum, and the Columbia Museum of Art.
Elder Gallery’s exhibition will run through April 4,
2006
