Thirty Years of Creating Art
November 4, 2005
During the month of November Elder Gallery in Charlotte will
present a thirty-year retrospective of the work of North Carolina
artist Juan Logan. Logan’s work has been featured in
over 250 solo and group exhibitions across the country including
the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the North Carolina Museum of
Art, the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, the Southeastern
Center for Contemporary Art, the Carnegie Institute and the
Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Speaking about his art, Logan states, “I’ve never
been a great talker. Making art is how I relate the best.
The more I work, the more I realize I’m still looking
for a way of talking.” Logan’s artwork inspires
the viewer to ponder what the artist is saying and challenges
the viewer to carry on an imaginary dialogue with the artist.
“Traditionally, as a culture, we talk about the things
we believe in rather than practice those things,” says
Logan. Thirty Years of Creating Art explores the life and
times of an African-American artist who has heard much conversation
of what people believe. His exhibition graphically depicts
actions that people have taken which both support and contradict
what they purport.
Thirty Years of Creating Art showcases the vast artistic talent
that Logan has developed over three decades. Paintings, sculpture,
mixed media and print-making will tell Juan Logan’s
story as we travel into his world.
Logan’s work is included in over sixty corporate and
public collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art,
the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the Museum of African American
Art of Los Angeles and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
He has received grants and fellowships from many sources,
including the John Michael Kohler Arts Center- Arts/Industry
Program; the North Carolina Arts Council, the Lannan Foundation;
Phillip Morris Corporation; University of North Carolina;
and the McColl Center for Visual Arts Residency.
Logan is Associate Professor, Director of Graduate Studies
in Studio Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill.
On November 4th the artist will participate in a gallery
talk beginning at 7:00 p.m. during the opening event
at Elder Gallery. The exhibition will run through
November 30, 2005. |
