Elder Gallery presents

Karen Roberson Powell
&
Leandro Manzo

Elder Gallery presents an exhibition of bronze sculptures and colorful paintings which create an exciting and dramatic view of life from two artists’ perspectives.

Leandro Manzo of Los Angeles and Powell from North Carolina, have created all new work for their exhibition. Form and Substance opens in the Charlotte gallery on Friday, June 3rd at six o’clock in the evening.

Manzo was born in Argentina in 1969 and is the fourth generation of artists in a family of well-known artisans. The director of the Museum of Visual Arts in Buenos Aires, Aldo Severi, recognized the talent of the young Leandro Manzo and arranged the first exhibition of Manzo’s work at the Museum at the age of thirteen.

Leandros’s paintings are included in several International public and private collections in Argentina, Sao Paulo, Amsterdam, Barcelona, London, Madrid, Paris, Vienna, Zurich, Mexico City, and Toronto. This is his first exhibition at Elder Gallery.

Karen Roberson Powell received her M.F.A. at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in 1988 with a concentration in sculpture. She pursued additional training in Italy, Wales, and England as well as the Academy of Realist Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Carving Studio in Proctor, Vermont.

In order to further develop her knowledge of bronze casting she apprenticed at the Green Mountain Fine Arts Foundry in Crowley, Texas. In 1993 she took a year’s leave from her university position to attend the Berllanderi Sculpture Workshop near Cardiff, Wales. While there she was featured on BBC television and radio for her installation at Cardiff Bay for a piece entitled "The Voyage.”

Powell received the Howard Scholarship in Art while a student at UNCG and also was awarded a teaching assistantship while pursuing her masters degree. She has received awards for her work in juried competitions in Dallas, Georgia and Texas.

Her exhibitions have ranged from the United States to Wales and Italy. Her works are in private and corporate collections throughout the United States. She is also included in collections in Wales, Canada and Belgium. She currently is teaching at Warren Wilson College near Asheville, North Carolina.

Form and Substance will run through July 16, 2005.
