Elder Art Gallery Gallery to Present

“Four Shadow Plus One”

On January 10th Elder Art Gallery Gallery will provide a sneak preview of four artists who have recently joined the gallery’s roster. Leonel Matheu, Gina Gilmour, Karen Roberson Powell, Jill Jones and Tom Perkinson will be featured in upcoming exhibitions at Elder Art Gallery during 2003.

Cuban-born painter Leonel Matheu is scheduled for a one-man show in September. During this special preview in January, the gallery will exhibit four paintings by this internationally-known artist whose work provides a dramatic narrative of the continuing struggle of man against the destruction of the natural world. Matheu arrived from Havana in 1988 and has made Miami Springs, Florida his home. His family was the subject of an HBO movie, For Love or Country, starring Andy Garcia.

Gina Gilmour is a Charlotte native who has spent most of her adult life painting and exhibiting her art in New York City. She currently maintains studios in both Manhattan and Charlotte. Gilmour’s work will include paintings and pieces constructed using neon.

Karen Roberson Powell has recently moved from Dallas, Texas to Marshall, North Carolina. She received her MFA at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro with a concentration in sculpture. She has studied in Italy, Wales, and England as well as at the Academy of Realist Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Carving Studio in Proctor, Vermont. Elder Art Gallery will preview her bronze sculptures during the January show. Powell will participate in a two-person show at Elder Art Gallery during November.

Spartanburg artist Jill Jones will exhibit her unique pastel and charcoal drawings during the January show. A number of works from her “Southern Series” will present her view of the landscape from a native Southerner’s perspective.

Tom Perkinson of New Mexico is nationally known for his beautiful impressionistic oil paintings. Perkinson strives to communicate his personal artistic statement clearly, through painting scenes that celebrate the beauty and innocence of life. When describing his paintings Perkinson uses words such as light spirited, romantic, idealistic, innocent, carefree and simple times. Elder Art Gallery will host a one-man show for Perkinson in August of this year.

FOUR SHADOW PLUS ONE will open with a reception on Friday, January 10, 2003, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The exhibition will run through February 22nd.
