Elder Art Gallery Gallery
Brings “The Masters” to Charlotte

In keeping with our commitment to bring exceptional artwork to Charlotte and the surrounding area, Elder Art Gallery Gallery will present The Masters, which opens on Friday, April 19th. Theexhibition features the work of Marc Chagall, Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Miro, Roberto Matta, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol.

“The Masters includes a number of significant pieces from each artist, both in size and in subject matter,” says Larry Elder, owner. “We are showing Lichtenstein’s Wallpaper with Blue Floor Interior that measures eight and one-half feet by twelve and one-half feet. This is a difficult-to-find piece that commands a striking presence.”

Joan Miro’s La Guerriere de Cent Ans is another exciting lithograph that is large in scale and is from an edition of thirty. “It has been said that when Miro had finished the piece and was ready to print it, a special table had to be built to accommodate its size,” says Elder. “It is considered by many to be one of Miro’s finest lithographs.”

The exhibition features several of Andy Warhol’s lithographs from his Cowboys and Indians Series. In addition, Speed Skater and Electric Chair are being shown.

Also included in The Masters is work by Keith Haring, who was known as the “Subway Artist” in New York City. While living in New York City and traveling on its subway system Haring gained a great appreciation of the creative works by the city’s graffiti artists. One day while waiting on a subway platform he noticed some empty black paper panels which were used to cover up old advertisements against the platform walls. Haring thought, “These panels are just dying to be drawn on!” He rushed out of the subway and bought some white chalk, came back and began drawing on the black panels. The rest is history. His creativity and adventure with his painting and drawing gained him international acclaim. Keith Haring died at the age of 31 in 1990.

The Masters opens on Friday, April 19th with a reception from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. The show continues at the gallery through May 31st.
